Like everyone has said here, it depends on what part of your body you are getting the tattoo and your general tolerance for pain. For me the first cut stings and after that its not that bad. the pain is not lasting either. If you've ever cut yourself shaving or anything and ended up putting alcohol on the spot. If you can remember that burn you get that stings for a minute…to me thats what the pain feels like.
And no it doesn't throb all day. (except you're getting a large piece with a lot of shading done ). you just feel sore in the hours that follow and less in the following days.
I wouldn't take a medication before the tattoo tho. Certain drugs like aspirins could thin your blood and have you bleeding more than u should be. The pain is not nearly as bad or agonizing as some people will have you think. Otherwise, so many people wouldn't have tattoos now would they?
Goodluck.
