Question by Jennifer: What is so trashy about neck tattoos?
I don’t understand the negative attention neck tattoos get. If you have long hair and can cover them, what difference does it make that it’s on your neck? Maybe it’s just close-minded people who talk about them, but really, what’s wrong with them?
If you just hate all tattoos, don’t bother answering.
Thanks everyone!

It just doesn’t present a good image. I have 3 tattoos and still want to get more, it’s just neck tattoos don’t look good on people. Also it’s on your neck so everyone will probably be able to see it even if you say you can hide it with your hair. So are you going to get it on the back of your neck? Also just because people say neck tattoos are trashy it doesn’t mean they are close minded. It just gives off the wrong image and people will perceive certain things about you. Also if you really want to get the tattoo on your neck then why does it matter what anyone thinks about it. Also I’m not trying to be mean but I see a lot of people who work at burger king or McDonald’s have neck tats. Like the other poster said get them on your arms or back where everyone else gets them.
I’ve heard a couple different reasons. Neck tattoos, while they can theoretically be covered by hair, shirt collars, etc. make a pretty bold statement. If you choose to put something so permanent in a place that is so visible, plenty of people are going to take that as a personality and lifestyle symbol. Neck tattoos show that the person who has them refuses to accept that plenty of people dislike tattoos, and don’t want to be forced to look at them. Of course, the placement probably indicates that the person really likes the tattoo, or it is part of a personal statement. But too many people read it as “I’m a criminal/thug/bad person, so watch the f*ck out” or “I don’t give a f*ck if you don’t want to sit next to me in Friendlys with your four year old, you have to, and you have to look at my sweet-a$$ neck tattoo!” But that’s really not the case. I have a hard time believing that people get neck tattoos to offend other people. That’s a pretty permanent insult. Way too many people get like, personally offended by tattoos that will never, ever affect their lives in any way.
There isn’t anything the matter with neck tattoos, it’s just that our society hasn’t quite caught up yet. To many people, tattoos are still considered taboo, but for those of us who have them know it’s just way to express our selves in a way that we choose and it’s just as simple as that.
We’re scared of what we don’t understand.
Don’t see anything wrong with them, either. But being ‘trashy’ has nothing to do with your ink. It has everything to do with being promiscuous. Tattoos won’t make you promiscuous, any more than a steady diet of cat food will turn you into a cat. Neck tattoos included. Take care.
I feel like you left a lot out, especially the emphasis and meaning some cultures placed on tattoos, and the magical uses of such tattoos – imagine having the power of an amulet or sigil without having to actually carry it or worry about it being lost. Tattoos have a lot of power and potential and most importantly, a lot of history. I know that while I do seek designs which I find appealing, one of my ultimate goals for a tattoo is something useful magically and something magically meaningful. Tattoos are a permanent bond (with minor exception) and as such have a lot of use with magick.
As to the acceptability debate in the work place, there's always UV tattoos which are not only hidden but that look AWESOME.
