It gently breaks down the ink under the skin. The best part is that it does it naturally and gently so there's no skin damage or scaring. If your tattoo is really dark, they make a product with a higher concentration to break down darker inks. Lotions and potions only reach down to 3 layers of skin, while tattoo ink sits between the sixth and seventh layer of skin. The guys at my tattoo shop have tried it with very disappointing results. Your best bet would be laser removal. It can get expensive, but from what I hear you get really satisfactory results from it. It might discolor somewhat but I do not believe it will remove it completely like laser removal. I wouldn't waste my money on over the counter products, I'd go to dermatologist to get their opinion.
